Model vs index

Where the model agrees — and where it doesn't

Index inclusion creates benchmark-driven buying regardless of fundamentals. Here is where the model's independent verdict aligns with the index signal and where it flags caution — names to buy because they are good, vs names the market is buying only because passive funds must.

Benchmark demand is real but not infinite. FTSE Frontier trackers are smaller than EM products — total AUM in dedicated frontier vehicles is estimated in the low single-digit USD billions. Position sizes for NGX names will be modest. The model's fundamental score remains the primary input; treat index-flow as a short-term tailwind, not a permanent upgrade.
Flow context

What passive inclusion actually means in practice

Who has to buy?

ETFs and index funds benchmarked to the FTSE Frontier Markets index must hold the Nigerian names in proportion to their free-float-adjusted market cap weight. Active managers benchmarked to Frontier indices face tracking-error pressure to at least partially position. Discretionary allocators may use inclusion as a trigger to revisit Nigeria after years of avoidance.

How large are the flows?

FTSE Frontier-benchmarked AUM is materially smaller than Emerging Markets vehicles. Estimated flows into NGX at inclusion are in the range of low-to-mid USD hundreds of millions spread across 31 names — meaningful for individual stocks, but modest relative to NGX's total daily value traded. Large-cap names absorb flows more easily; Small Cap constituents could see outsized percentage moves on thin liquidity.

Currency and FX access

Foreign investors transact in USD. The ₦/$ rate and ease of repatriation are gating factors on how quickly and how fully flows materialise. A stable or appreciating naira removes a major barrier; renewed FX scarcity could delay position-building even after formal inclusion.

Post-inclusion normalisation

Inclusion events typically front-run in the weeks before the effective date as sophisticated funds pre-position. Mechanical buying on inclusion day tends to be smaller than anticipated. The period to watch is the 30–90 days post-inclusion when price discovery and continued position-building determine whether the re-rating holds.

Flow estimates are directional, not precise. The numbers above are illustrative context drawn from public AUM disclosures and prior frontier-inclusion events (e.g. Kuwait 2020, Romania 2020). Actual flows depend on FX access, fund mandates, and market timing. Do not trade on flow estimates alone.
Market mechanics

T+1 settlement: what it means for foreign investors

NGX operates on a T+2 settlement cycle — foreign investors buy today (T), receive shares on T+2. For inclusion in global indices, settlement speed matters: slower markets make it harder for trackers to rebalance precisely on inclusion day.

T+2
NGX current settlement cycle

Trade today, receive shares two business days later. Standard across most African exchanges; slower than the T+1 now implemented on US and some European markets.

FX
Foreign-investor repatriation window

Gains realised in ₦ must be converted to USD for repatriation. The Investors & Exporters (I&E) window governs access. Liquidity in this window is a key watchpoint for sustained foreign positioning.

CSCS
Central depository — CSCS Plc

The Central Securities Clearing System holds dematerialised shares. Foreign investors require a CSCS account (via a SEC-licensed custodian/broker). Account opening timelines are improving but remain a friction point for first-time entrants.

What this means for domestic investors: faster, better-capitalised foreign participants improve liquidity depth — bid-ask spreads on the FTSE 31 names may narrow post-inclusion. This is generally positive for local investors who want to trade in or out of positions.
Watch list

What we're tracking from 21 Sep onwards

Daily ADV on the FTSE 31

Average Daily Value traded across the 31 constituents. A step-change in ADV is the clearest signal that foreign flows are materialising. We track this daily and will publish a chart from 21 Sep.

Price vs pre-inclusion baseline

Week-one and month-one price performance relative to the 30-day pre-inclusion average. We'll publish a follow-up note w/c 27 Sep comparing actuals to the model's pre-inclusion scores.

₦/$ rate stability

The naira's stability is a prerequisite for sustained foreign positioning. A move beyond ₦1,700/$ materially changes the USD return calculus for offshore investors.

Diverge names — do they rerate?

The model Avoid names being bought by index funds are the most interesting test. If passive flow lifts prices without a fundamental improvement, the model will flag the spread between price and score. We'll track this explicitly.

FTSE quarterly rebalance (Mar 2027)

Index weights are reviewed quarterly. Names that fail the free-float or liquidity screen risk removal. We'll flag any constituents whose ADV or float deteriorates below FTSE thresholds.
